If you want to go very fast through very rough terrain, your best choice other than building a full blown race truck from a stock Bronco (which could cost you in excess of $100K to build) is a pre-owned Vintage Race Bronco, IF you can find one for sale. I have NEVER been in a Classic Bronco that rides as smoothly going 60MPH over 3 foor whoops as this one does, plus it is STREET LEGAL. This is a race winning truck with race winning history!
In 1995, this '72 CLASS 3 Bronco won the 1995 S.C.O.R.E. Off-Road Class 3 points championship. It won the '95 Baja 500, took 2nd in the '95 Baja 1000, won the '95 Laughlin 250 and the '95 Mint 400! This extraordinary Vintage Bronco compares to mid- 90's Class 3 SCORE Off-Road race history as the "Stroppes" compared to 70's racing history. This is a mid-90's CLASS 3 RACE WINNER.
RR purchased this bronco in 1997, when it's former owner Robert Hayley moved into the Pro Truck class. Since purchasing it, we performed some major suspension upgrades to it in 2001 & '02 (cost over $20K). Since then, it has only been used for fun and for shows, (no races, no rock crawling and no pre-running). Never rolled in all of it's years of racing or trail blazing! RR has put less than 2500 actual off-road miles on it since 2001.
Now, some more history since we've owned it:
In late 2001, it received a new "Hammes Bros" of San Diego 351 windsor engine with Edlebrock aluminum heads, new cam, Holley 650 carb, MSD ignition, (cost over $10k), HB was claiming it would make 475 HP, but actually it might make more in the 400 hp range and around 420-450 ft lbs. of torque. Much more work, but not much more driving has been done since then.
2007 upgrade work:
New custom headers and stainless exhaust
New electrical system with fuse panel
Complete new custom wire harness
Dash sectioned (for easier access)
Restructured gauges (dash opens on hinges now)
Extensive professional sheet metal work to floors, firewall & cowl
Removed bar from windshield frame between seats
New removable rear sheet metal panel behind seats
New lighted instrument panel behind floor shifter
Parker pumper set up
New fuel and brake petals
New throttle linkage
New K&N air cleaner and custom base
Power tuned, MSD curve adjusted
All fluids changed
New timing cover
New water pump, new hoses
Valve covers modified, new gaskets
Radiator mounting changed, all new hoses
New aluminum headlamp splash shields
New fuel lines, new electric pump
Seats lowered 2" with new mounting positions
Seat belt mounting locations changed
New custom removable aluminum roof panel
Since this service, less than 5 runs to California City (each run maybe 10-20 miles) have been put on it.
The C-4 automatic trans recently gone through, with a reverse valve body, Winters gate shifter, totally rebuilt Dana 20 transfer case with Wild Horses heavy duty output shaft, heavy duty trans and p.s. coolers, re-inforced factory power steering system with 1.5 turn coleman speeder box (installed by Jonathon from Baldwin Racing), removable steering wheel, Ford 9" big bearing front axle with 4.56 gearing, Detroit Locker, very heavy axle trussing, three link front suspension with 1 1/4" heims, Currie axles, daytona nodular pinion, 12" limiting straps, front and rear disc brakes, new Autometer gauges and tach, custom big bearing 9" custom spool rear end, 31 spline axles, new 12" limiting cables, Recently re-upholstered in black Beard racing seats with blue 5 point Simpson camlock race belts.
Heavily trussed full cage, (6) 15x10 American Eagle aluminum mags, six 35" BFG Mud Terrain KO tires, (plus two additional BFG 35" spare tires) Suspension includes King 14" x 3" diameter front dual rate coil over shocks & 2 Fox 4" hydraulic air bump stops and a centered (3) heim third link in front, 2 Kuster 18" x 3" by-pass shocks, National quarter eliptical 32 leaf rear springs, new four link system at the rear, heavily trussed radius arms and trailing arms, (14) 1 1/4" heim joints throughout. All shocks rebuilt in June 2004 by one of Baldwin racing's techs, and are well valved for this bronco. Less than 1000 miles on the shocks since rebuild. Rear drive shaft just rebuilt in 2010.
Rocky Roads front & rear pre-runner bumpers, King Shock-ready fiberglass hood, plus 5 inches wider than stock Bronco fenders, 5 Hella 130 watt lights, dual rear mounted spares, 30 gal. Fuel Safe fuel cell, fiberglass door inserts, Crowe black racing nets, new competition orange two-stage paint, reverse kc light, amber racing light, Hi Lift jack, tool bag mounts under pass. seat, new windshield and seal, very few broncos built to this high standard. Capable of 60-80mph over 3 foot whoops!
Street legal, clean CA title. With parts, fabrication and time, over $65K has been invested! A true collectors item that could compete against any vintage bronco that races in the S.C.O.R.E. series today. Would make a great pre-runner for the 2011 Baja 1000, or enter it and try to win it yourself! Comes with a tan canvas marine quality heavy duty car cover (cost me $600) I have owned this vehicle for nearly 15 years, I assure you will not find one for sale ANYWHERE that rides as smooth, and is this fast & sturdy in rough terrain.
